Fatal Collision Involving Semi and Van

A 77-year-old man died last week in a motor vehicle accident involving his van and a cattle-hauling semi. Family members are still shocked.

The deceased’s sister says, “He was always very cautious. That’s what we can’t understand. He was always very cautious when he was driving or whatever he was doing.”

The 77-year-old grew up in the Wingham-area near Elm Creek. Later, in 2005, he moved to Portage la Prairie where he lived with his brother. He lived there with him until just last year when the brother died.

His sister reports that “He was a very quiet person. You hardly ever get a word from him. He was very quiet.” Though the older gentleman was quiet, he was still a generous being. His friends and family share that he often treated them to a spot of coffee or dinner.

The farmer-by-trade, enjoyed playing hockey, baseball and, as he aged, table games. While he enjoyed watching the local hockey games, he also happened to be a big Boston Bruins fan. “He loved hockey,” his sister said.

At the scene of the accident that took his life, the RCMP pronounced him dead. The accident happened at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Road 27 – 5 kilometers east of Portage. When a fatal truck accident occurs in New York City and Queens, investigations are quickly begun by the authorities.

“Reports from the authorities suggest that the semi, travelling west on the Trans-Canada Highway struck the van on Road 27 W,” a NYC Truck Accident Lawyer following the case reveals. It seems that the older gentleman took the wrong road and when he attempted to turn around, the truck was there and the accident occurred.

Responding to the emergency call were Portage la Prairie RCMP, Portage Emergency Services firefighters and Regional Health Ambulance Services paramedic.

Neither the driver nor the passenger in the semi-truck was injured. The cattle even escaped injury.

Because it takes 40% longer for a big rig to stop than other smaller vehicles, an accident is often unavoidable when the environment changes in the path of a semi. A NY Truck Accident Lawyer says that even when drivers are alert and see the change as soon as it occurs, it is often too late.
