The body of a 43-year-old mother of two was found by police in an industrial part on the eastern outskirts of Matamata. Officials believe she was the victim of a hit-and-run.

The woman was wearing dark clothing and no shoes.

The suspect was probably a truck driver who is thought to have gone back to see what he hit. The victim’s 26-year-old son said that a truck driver who thought he hit something near where the body was found contacted police. He had turned around to check whether he hit something but said he did not find anything at the time.

Oil and diesel fuel were spilled in a semi-truck accident in July of 2000 on Highway 195 near Pullman. The 50-year-old driver was injured.

The man, who was driving a 1998 International semi-tractor trailer, had to receive stitches to bind up a cut to his head and was admitted to the Pullman Memorial Hospital for overnight observation. A source says it is common when certain signs are present to hold a patient overnight to ensure no further damage was done to the brain or other parts of the body.

According to a state patrol trooper in Nassau, the driver was looking at a map when the truck went off the side of the road and into a ditch where it hit a plow.

A 24-mile section of Interstate 70 closed last November due to a rock slide that left boulders imbedded 6 feet deep into the roadway.

The detour prescribed by officials tending to the road closure was a 220-mile route through the western mountains.

The expected road closure is to last at least a day, as Department of Transportation workers clear the debris from the estimated 100 foot by 10 foot rock slide. Some of the boulders cleared were as large as a van.

A fatal chain reaction on Interstate 70 was instigated by a semi-truck whose driver did not have the proper permits for his oversized load. When the burdened tractor trailer collided with a construction barrier it was pushed into oncoming traffic.

Initially, the Bronx police ticketed the man for not carrying his permit with him, but they later discovered that the driver did not have the appropriate endorsements on his permit on file at his company. The truck load exceeded the width and weight specified because he was delivering an asphalt machine to a city toad project.

He was within two-tenths of a mile from his destination when the truck accident occurred.
